Starboard Hand Day beacon

  • Is triangular in shape and usually found on land.
  • It has a red triangle centered on a white triangular background, and a thick red reflecting border.
  • During daylight hours, this beacon marks the starboard (right) side of a channel or the location of danger.
  • Must be kept on the starboard side when proceeding upstream.
  • May display an even number made of white reflecting material.

Port Hand Day beacon

  • Is square in shape and usually found on land.
  • It has a black or green square centered on a white square background, and a thick green reflecting border.
  • During daylight hours, this beacon marks the port (left) side of a channel or the location of danger.
  • Must be kept on the port side when proceeding upstream.
  • May display an odd number made of white reflecting material.
