Compass

Everyone on a boat should know what a compass is and how it works. Compasses are constructed so the needle always points North. There are 360 degrees in a compass. Note, however, that while magnetic compasses may help you find your direction, they are influenced by the proximity of metallic and/or electrical devices and could therefore provide false information. When using your compass, always take into account that the built-in compass on your boat may be affected by such devices. Navigation Safety Regulations require certain boats to carry a magnetic compass and if more than 37km from shore a compass-bearing device. To learn more, a course in navigation is recommended.
