Hull Leaks or Flooding

At all times, boat operators should ensure that there are tools and materials on board which will assist in temporarily stopping hull leaks or flooding. In the event of a hull leak or flooding, such as when water begins to rise in the boat or to accumulate at the bottom, take the following actions:

  • Locate the source of the hull leak or flooding, and if possible, stop it.
  • Remove accumulations of water in the hold or other compartments of the boat using hand-held bailers, manual pumps and/or bilge pumping systems, as appropriate to the circumstances and the craft.
  • If needed, exhibit signals to indicate distress and/or the need of help.

The operator should check navigational references for water levels, times of low, slack and high tides, the direction of water flow and also identify places to take shelter in the event of leaks, mechanical problems or foul weather.
